Thạch Chí Khang (Trần Đình Oai) là một thanh niên nhiệt tình trung hậu, làm phụ bếp ở sòng bài, nhờ dịp may đã thấy nhị đại cao thủ Phương Chân (Cao Hùng) và Nhiếp Vạn Long (Tần Phối) đánh bài với nhau, bắt đầu có hứng thú với bài bạc, có một hôm một thanh niên tên Bá Kỳ (Lữ Tụng Hiền) tới sòng bài và ăn hết các tay bịp từ Indonesia tới, gây náo động cả sòng bài, vài tìm cách giết Long để trả thù cho Cha, nhưng đã thất bại và được sự giúp đỡ của Khang và thoát khỏi vòng tay của Long, hai người trở thành bạn thân, trong một dịp may Khang được Ton Nhất Phong (Trương Tinh) dạy nghề bài bạc, Khang và Kỳ hùn hạp mở sòng bài, mục đích để ảnh hưởng sòng bài của Long, nên Long cho người phá và đốt sòng bài làm cho Kỳ chết cháy, cuối cùng hai bên dùng bài để làm nơi quyết đấu, kết quả Khang tìm được yếu điểm của Long, đánh một vố chí tử và Khang trở thành Vua cờ bạc

Cốt truyện:
Vào những năm 20 tại Thượng Hải, một nơi long xà hỗn tạp, trong đó những đại ca long đầu địa phương, suốt đời đều luẩn quẩn trong đống bạc đếm hoài không hết, với lòng tham vô tận, với quyền uy vô song, với sắc gái tuyệt vời bên cạnh, bề mặt thì luôn luôn bao trùm đầy nghĩa khí anh hùng, anh em sống chết có nhau, trong khi đó đằng sau của những sự huy hoàng đó đã bao gồm biết bao sự lừa dảo, gian dối, cấu xé phỉnh gạt lẫn nhau có một điều đáng khiến cho mọi người khiếp sợ, đó là dục vọng. Thắng làm vua thua làm giặc. Trong thâm tâm của những tên máu mặt đó không hề có hai chữ xót thương, tội nghiệp...

Vào một ngày năm 1928, Đổ Thần Trung Quốc Long Tứ ra tù và đi đến Thượng Hải với hai bàn tay trắng.

Trên chuyến xe lửa đến Thượng Hải, ngồi cùng toa với Long Tứ toàn là những tay cờ bạc lừng danh trong làng bịp. Cũng trên chuyến xe đó, trong toa xe đó, những ân oán của luật hè phố mạnh được yếu thua bắt đầu manh nha. Phim này khá hay. Nó lôi kéo người xem từ đầu cho đến hết. Có tương đối khá ít những mục nhàm chán và dường như đạo diễn không có ý kéo dài những đoạn không cần thiết.

Ngôn Phi vì bị Mỹ Dao và Vân Cửu hại nên mất trí nhớ. Ngôn Tinh tìm đủ mọi cơ hội để ép Kỳ Phương quay trở lại giới cờ bạc. Không còn một điểm tựa nào cộng thêm nỗi đau về quan hệ mờ ám giữa chồng mình và Giang Dạ Tuyết, Kỳ Phương trở nên mất phương hướng.
Ngôn Phi cuối cùng cũng nhớ lại được tất cả. Sau khi phát hiện ra Ngôn Tinh đang ép Kỳ Phương phải tham gia vào một ván bài sinh tử, Ngôn Phi quyết định sẽ thế chỗ vợ mình, mong khơi gợi lại chút lương tâm trong lòng Ngôn Tinh.
Ngôn Phi thua bạc và ra hạn trong ba ngày anh sẽ tự đến nộp mạng. Trong thời gian ba ngày ấy, Ngôn Phi đã phát hiện ra mối quan hệ cha con giữa Đổng Mỹ Giao và Hoàng Vân Cửu nhờ giấy xác nhận AND.
Ngày thứ hai, Ngôn Phi đến gặp con trai để nói hết những gì anh và vợ đã kỳ vọng vào Ngôn Tinh và giải thích cho con hiểu ý nghĩa của sòng bạc. Ngôn Tinh cảm thấy bối rối và hối hận khi nghe bố nói bèn khuyên Ngôn Phi cùng Kỳ Phương trốn khỏi đảo San Hô.
Ngày cuối cùng trước khi Ngôn Phi ra đi, anh thách đấu với Hoàng Vân Cửu một ván bài sinh tử. Con Át Bích đã rơi vào tay của Vân Cửu nên Ngôn Phi thua ngay sau đó. Trước khi ra đi, Ngôn Phi xin lỗi Kỳ Phương vì đã làm cho cô đau khổ và nhờ Kỳ Phương chăm sóc cho Dạ Tuyết.
